                               and Discoverers



        Inventors  are  the  individuals  who  develop  a  new  process,  appliance,  machine,  or  article,  while
        discoverers are those who observe a scientific or natural phenomenon for the first time.

          1    This German physicist discovered X-rays. He won the Nobel
              Prize in Physics in 1901 for this path-breaking invention.

                                       2    This  American physician and medical  researcher invented and
                                           developed the first safe and effective polio vaccine in 1955, at a time
                                           when Americans feared polio as much as the atomic bomb.

          3    This  physicist,  astronomer,  and  mathematician  was  born  in
              1564 in Pisa, Italy. He invented the thermometer and developed
              the telescope. He also propounded the Law of Pendulum.

                                       4    This Swiss biologist and physician discovered DNA in white blood
                                           cells. He named the substance ‘nuclein’.

          5    This British inventor, chemist, and philosopher contributed to
              the  discovery  of  chlorine  and  iodine.  In  1815,  he  invented  a
              safety lamp for coal miners.

                                       6    This  French  chemist  and  microbiologist  lived  in  the  nineteenth
                                           century. He discovered that microorganisms cause fermentation and
                                           disease. He developed vaccines for anthrax and rabies.
