X. Read the following passage carefully.
NEW
NEW WAYS OF LEARNING WAYS OF LEARNING
(1) A group of teachers conducted a study on students and learning issues in 2008. This
research yielded an interesting finding. Teachers observed that kids who struggled in
certain topics, such as maths or art, might excel in other subjects. Students who did
poorly in reading, on the other hand, nearly always did poorly in all of their other
classes.
(2) The teachers who conducted the study were initially perplexed by this, but they soon
discovered the reason. When the professors examined the subjects in which the kids
were failing, they discovered that even subjects such as maths and science were built
around reading.
(3) Of course, additional abilities were required, such as learning to add and subtract in
maths class. The majority of the how-to explanations had to be read by the students.
Many of the homework tasks required students to read lengthy instructions and
assessments, and class problems frequently contained story problems, which required
students to read and comprehend before they could be addressed.
(4) As a student, you need to keep in mind that when you will attend college in future,
you will spend practically all of your study time reading. You will require an increasing
amount of knowledge, the majority of which comes from the printed content you
must read. Even if you could obtain recordings or movies with all of the information,
you must understand that they will be of little use until and unless you are able to
read. Magazines and books may all be available on microfilm in the next few years,
but they must still be read.
(5) Success in school courses still hinges on the ability to read, and pupils who are unable
to read, or who cannot read well enough to grasp subject, are at a disadvantage.
You’re entering a world where technical reading is becoming more and more important
every day. Application usage instructions are growing increasingly complicated. Written
instructions for food preparation, traffic signs, travel directions, and safety advice
must all be followed, all of which necessitate the ability to read. Every day, people
in modern culture, on average, read hundreds, if not thousands, of words.
On the basis of your understanding of the above passage, answer the following questions.
1. In which year did the study related to learning issues take place?
(a) 2008 (b) 2012 (c) 2009 (d) 2020
2. According to para 1, what did the study of a group of students reveal?
(a) Students did poorly in some subjects and were average in others.
