        X. Read the following passage carefully.

WATCH OUT FOR THOSE SUMMER ALLERGIESATCH OUT FOR THOSE SUMMER ALLERGIES
                       W
            (1) Allergies can strike when you least expect it. After using crocin (paracetamol) for
everything from headaches to fevers and toothaches for most of my life, I developed
an allergy to it a few years ago. A similar thing happened to my friend: After eating
Thai food for supper, he found himself unable to breathe. After a number of painful
and expensive tests, he was told the chest tightness was caused by an allergy to
shellfish, which he ate once a week and had never reacted to before.

            (2) Symptoms of an allergic response include a stuffy or runny nose, frequent sneezing,
itchy throat, rash, sinus, ear ache, difficulty breathing, stomach cramps, and itchy, red,
or watery eyes. Pollen, dust, contaminated outside air, and indoor pollutants including
dust mites, animal dander, cigarette smoke, and mould are all frequent environmental
pollutants, while medicines, paint, and chemicals in cleaners and cosmetics like hair
colour and skin creams are all triggers. Milk, soy, wheat, egg, peanut, tree nuts, fish,
and shellfish are the eight allergens that account for over 90% of food allergies.

                                                                                               33
