SPACE TOURISMACE TOURISM
(1) Historically, spaceflight has been a government-led endeavour, and it has never been
cheap. However, because of the development of SpaceX and other private spaceflight
businesses, the exorbitant cost of sending people and payloads into space is now
starting to diminish.
(2) SpaceX charges ` 461.4 crore to launch commercial satellites weighing up to 50,000
pounds into orbit using its 230-foot-tall Falcon 9. The United Launch Alliance Atlas
V, which starts at ` 543.3 crore for a 41,000-pound payload, is the closest American
competitor.
(3) These are only the beginning prices; government entities usually pay more for a
comprehensive list of additional services. For example, the Air Force paid SpaceX
` 718.2 crore in 2019 to launch a GPS satellite. The costs ‘skyrocket’ as the purpose
and mission changes. The X Prize, which was established in 1994 to encourage the
development of new space travel technologies, has drawn at least 21 concepts from
people in five nations. The prize will be awarded by the non-profit X Prize Foundation,
which was created by a group of donors inspired by Charles Lindbergh’s $25,000
Orteig Prize in 1927.
(4) A ticket might cost anything from ` 1.8 crore to tens of crores of rupees, depending
on where you’re going. If all you want to do is cross the 62-mile-high Karman line
that separates the upper atmosphere from outer space, Virgin Galactic says it will
take you there for ` 1.8 crore.
(5) Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ rocket business, has ambitions to launch space passengers
on brief suborbital flights using its New Shepard rocket system. Passengers on Virgin
Galactic and Blue Origin will join an exclusive group of less than a dozen private
persons who have paid for their own voyages into space.
