• It is better to share rather than to hide: Sometimes, talking openly about an issue with
someone you trust, like a teacher or counsellor can provide a new perspective and comfort. On
the other hand, just brooding about it can make it seem bigger than it is.
• Patience is important: In all relationships with friends and family, patience is important. You
need to develop patience for a person, for their many quirks and for their various moods. No
relationship will go smoothly at all times. So, instead of taking every disagreement personally,
take it just as a part of the other person’s nature.

A FEW TOOLS & TECHNIQUES
If you are like Ayesha or know someone like her who is suffering because of parental conflict, the
most important thing they need is your compassion and understanding. Since parents form the
foundation of our lives, a conflict between them can shake us up thoroughly. However, there are
some things we must never lose sight of:
1. Maintaining your mental health is your own responsibility. If you are too confused to understand
some things, do not hesitate to approach a trusted adult. It may be a teacher or the school
counsellor. The important thing is to not bottle up your stress and confusion.
2. Try talking to one or both of your parents, whichever is comfortable and confide in them about
how disturbed you feel about their conflict. If this is not possible, try to detach yourself from the
situation because ultimately, you have no control over how other people behave. You can only
control yourself.
