ACTIVITY 10.3

OBJECTIVE
To construct an ellipse using a rectangle.

MATERIAL REQUIRED
 Hardboard  Threads/Wires

 White chart paper  Ruler

 Coloured paper  Glue
 Nails

PRE-REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE

1. Knowledge of conic sections
2. Knowledge of ellipse

PROCEDURE

1. Take a rectangular hardboard of a convenient size and paste a white chart paper on it.

2. Cut a rectangle PQRS of suitable dimensions from a coloured paper and paste it on the hardboard.
3. Divide the rectangle PQRS into four congruent rectangles as shown in Fig. (a).

4. Divide each of the sides SC and BC of the rectangle ABCS, into 11 equal parts.

5. Mark the points of subdivisions of SC as A , A , A , ... and that of BC as B , B , B , ... .
