These are some of the most popular international sports events.

1 The Olympic Games are the most celebrated sporting event in the
world. Every four years, the finest athletes in the world gather to
compete against each other. The Olympics attract athletes from
over 206 nations.

2 The FIFA World Cup is the most prestigious football competition
in the world. Brazil has won the FIFA World Cup five times.

3 Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. Since
1877, it has been played at the All England Croquet and Lawn
Tennis Club in Wimbledon, London. It is one of the four Grand
Slam tennis tournaments and is played on grass courts.

4 The international competition for Twenty-Twenty cricket is
organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The first ICC
World Twenty-Twenty was held in South Africa in 2007. In a short
time the competition has become popular, particularly in India.

5 The Commonwealth Games are an event held every four years in
which athletes from Commonwealth countries participate. The
Commonwealth nations are those that were formerly part of the
British Empire. Birmingham, UK, was the venue for the Games in
2022.

6 The Men’s Hockey World Cup was started in 1971. It is held
every four years since 1978. The most recent World Cup, in 2018,
was won by Belgium.
