13 13            Clauses










               Warm-up




             Insert appropriate clauses to make sentences.
             1.  We heard _________________________________________________________________.

          The groups of words that contain a subject and a finite verb are called the clauses.

                 Read the sentences given below.

               •    Shweta stopped.                   •  He danced.                         • The baby slept.

          Kinds of Clauses

          There are two kinds of clauses:
              1.  Independent Clause                                   2.  Dependent Clause

          ¾      An independent clause can be a sentence by itself or a part of a bigger sentence along with
                 other clauses. A simple sentence contains only one clause.

                                           subject + verb = complete thought


                 Read the sentence given below.

               •  The teacher taught me how to read.                   • I picked a flower for you.
          ¾      A dependent clause cannot stand by itself. It needs to be combined with an independent
                 clause.


                            subordinate conjunction + subject + verb = incomplete thought


          We need to have a main clause to make complete sense.
                 Read the sentence given below.

                    • I planted trees because I like flowers.
