6 6            Non-Finite Verbs

             Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verbs.

             4.  I am fond of _________________ (listen) to music.





          The words that tell us about the physical action that a person is doing are called the verbs.

          The verbs that have the past and the present form are called the finite verbs. The verbs that have
          forms other than past and present are called the non-finite verbs.

          A finite verb has a subject and can stand alone as a main verb. It changes with the tense, person
          and the number.

                 Read the sentences given below.

                    • We watched the film. (past)

                    • He goes to college every day. (present)
          A non-finite verb does not have a subject and cannot stand alone as a main verb. It does not
          change with the tense and the number.

                 Read the sentences given below.

                    • He likes eating ice cream.                  •  She liked eating ice cream.

                    • They like eating ice cream.                 •  You like eating ice cream.
          Here, the verb eating does not change with the number, person or tense.


          Kinds of Non-finite Verbs

          There are three kinds of non-finite verbs:

                  1.  Infinitives              2.  Gerunds                  3.  Participles
