Types of Concrete Nouns
We know that concrete nouns are the names of people, places, animals and objects. Most of these
names can be commonly used for each member of a group. But some nouns are particular names
given to people or places. Except, group of people, animals or objects have their own names.
Finally, various materials (wood, iron, etc.) have their own names, too. So concrete nouns are
divided into four classes:
1. Common Nouns 2. Proper Nouns
3. Collective Nouns 4. Material Nouns
Common Nouns
Study the following sentences carefully.
1. This road leads to the railway station.
2. The child has many toys.
Common names can be used for every member of its group/class. It does not point out any member
from others of its class. So it is called a common noun.
Remember
1. Each common noun has its plural form.
2. No common noun has its first capital letter unless it is the first word of a sentence or of a line
of a poem.
Proper Nouns
Study the following sentences carefully.
1. Premchand was a great story-writer.
2. The Himalayas is the highest mountain.
Study each word shown in colour in the above sentences. It is a particular name given to a common
noun to single it out from others of its group.
Premchand is a particular name given to a particular story-writer.
Himalayas is a particular name of a certain chain of mountain.
Such particular names are given to certain common nouns in order to point them out from
others of their groups. So they are called proper nouns.
Remember
1. A proper noun has no plural form.
2. A proper noun has its first letter always capital.
