E. Prefixes
Sometimes, we add a letter or a group of letters before a word to change its meaning.
Such letters are called prefixes. Common prefixes are un, mis, ir, dis and im. These
prefixes help to form the opposites of words.
• happy — unhappy • tidy — untidy
• fair — unfair • healthy — unhealthy
• correct — incorrect • kind — unkind
• possible — impossible • well — unwell
• polite — impolite • complete — incomplete
• regular — irregular • honest — dishonest
• direct — indirect • fit — unfit

meaning. Such letters are called suffixes. Common suffixes are ful, able, ly, less, en,
