The words writes, rises and fly tell us what each noun does. These are action verbs.


          Is, Are, Am


          Sometimes, a verb links the subject with the subject complement.

          Read the following sentences.

                 Mr Sharma is a doctor.
             O
                 I am a student.
             O
                 They are players.
             O
          In the above sentences, is, am and are all linking verbs.

          We use is with singular nouns in the present tense.

          We use am with I in present tense.

          We use are with plural nouns in the present tense.

          The words is, are and am are the present forms of the verb be. These are used in the

          following patterns.
          With a noun:

                 My uncle is a doctor.
             O
                 My sons are in scientists.
             O
          With an adjective:

                 The boy is sad.
             O
                 The students are happy.
             O

          With the -ing form of a verb to show continuous action:
                 He is going upstairs.
             O
                 They are going downstairs.
             O
          We use am with I.

                 I am hungry.
             O
                 I am a student.
             O



          Was, Were


          The words was and were are also the forms of the verb be. These are used in the past

          tense.
