        Multiplication as Repeated Addition

Look at the picture below. Count the number of chicks.

There are 3 groups of chicks.

There are 2 chicks in each group.

        Total chicks = 2 + 2 + 2 = 6

In the picture, the total number of chicks can be obtained by adding the same

number again and again. This is called repeated addition.

Since each group has the same number, we use a shorter method called

        multiplication.

          3 groups of 2 chicks = 6

                                   Multiplicand Multiplier

                                                        3 × 2 = 6 Product

        Instead of adding 2 three times, we can write 3 × 2 = 6

6 is called the product of the numbers. It can also be read as 3 twos = 6.

Fill in the boxes. One is done for you.

            2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8 + + + + =

            4 twos = 8 twos =
