            Like and Unlike Fractions

            Like Fractions

Two or more fractions with the same denominator are called like fractions.
            1 2 3
,, , etc. are like fractions.

            Comparison of Like Fractions

When denominators of the given 3 2 1
fractions are same, fraction with the 4 4 4
            greatest numerator is the greatest.

Order of numerators in the above fractions is 3 > 2 > 1.
                                         3
                                              2
                                                   1
So, order of fractions is > > .
                                                   4
                                              4
                                         4
                 Let's Try

Example 1: Which of the following are groups of like fractions?

                                   2
                                                            5 6 13 14
                              (a) , 3 , 4 , 5 (b) , , , (c) 6 , 7 , 8 , 9
                                   7 7 7 7 6 5 15 17 10 10 10 10
Solution: (a) and (c) are two groups of like fractions as they have fractions with the

                              same denominator.
                                          2 5 3 4
            Example 2: Arrange , , , in ascending order.
                                          9 9 9 9
Solution: All the fractions have same denominator. The numerators of the

fractions are 2, 5, 3, 4 and in ascending order they are

                                                   2
                               2 < 3 < 4 < 5, so, < 3 < 4 < 5 .
                                                   9 9 9 9

Thus, the ascending order of fractions is:

                                         2 , 3 , 4 , 5
                                         9 9 9 9
   99   100   101   102   103   104   105   106   107   108   109
