Clock
We already know that the instrument which tells us time is called a clock or watch.
Face of the clock is called dial. 5 equal divisions
The dial of the clock is divided into 12 big divisions 10 11 12 1 2 Hour Hand
marked as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. The gap 9 3
between two consecutive numbers is divided into 8 7 5 4 Minute hand
five equal divisions. 6 Dial
A clock has two hands. The shorter
hand is called the Hour hand and the Absorbing Facts
longer hand is called the Minute hand. The minute hand completes one round of
clock in 1 hour and the hour hand completes
Reading Time one round of the clock in 12 hours.
In the previous class, we have studied about to read the time when the minute hand is
at 12.
Using ‘To’ and ‘Past’
For reading time in hours and minutes, two words Left ‘To’ 11 12 1 Right ‘Past’
are generally used. 10 2
They are ‘To’ and ‘Past’. Left Part 9 4 3 Right Part
Let us imagine the dial of the clock consisting of 8 7 6 5
two semicircular parts.
If the minute hand is in left part, the word ‘To’ is used to read the time. And if the minute
hand is in the right part then the word ‘Past’ is used for reading the time.
In a clock, there are small equal divisions (ticks) between two consecutive numbers.
These divisions help us for reading time in minutes.
How to Read Time in Minutes?
When minute hand is at quarter past, quarter to and half past.
� First of all, note the position of the hour hand.
� It is obvious that the number indicated by hour hand tells the time in hours.
� Without reading the small divisions, we can tell about some particular times in
minutes also.
� In some particular positions of minute hand, we can read time in 12
quarter to, quarter past and half past. 10 11 1 2
� If minute hand is at 3 and hour hand is in between 7 and 8, the 9 3
time is read as “quarter past 7 (7:15)”. 8 7 6 5 4
