Number Patterns
Numbers, arranged in a series, follow a pattern. If we find the pattern in a number series,
then we can write the next numbers in the same series.
Let’s Attempt
Example: Look for the pattern and write the next three terms of the pattern.
(a) 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, ____, ____, ____ (b) 24, 21, 18, 15, 12, ____, ____, ____
(c) 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, ____, ____, ____
Solution: (a) 1 +2 3 +2 5 +2 7 +2 9 +2 11
Here, we see that the next number is two more than the previous number.
So, the next 3 numbers in this number series will be 13, 15 and 17.
(b) 24 –3 21 –3 18 –3 15 –3 12
Here, we see that the next number is 3 less than the previous number.
So, the next 3 numbers in this series will be 9, 6 and 3.
(c) 1 ×2 2 ×2 4 ×2 8 ×2 16
Here, we see that the next number is obtained by multiplying the
previous number by 2. So, the next numbers in this series will be 32, 64
and 128.
Exercise 9.2

(a) 2, 4, 6, 8, ______, ______, ______, ______, ______, ______
(b) 3, 7, 11, 15, ______, ______, ______, ______, ______, ______
