P. 97
Comparing Quantities 95
Example 7: An article is sold for ` 450 at a profit of 20%. Find the C.P.
Solution: Let the cost price of the article be ` 100.
Given profit = ` 20 on ` 100.
S.P. = ` (100 + 20) = ` 120
If S.P. is ` 120, then C.P. = ` 100
If S.P. is ` 1, then C.P. = ` 100
120
If S.P. is ` 450, then C.P. = ` 100 × 450 = ` 375
120
Hence, C.P. = ` 375.

2. Find the profit or loss per cent in the following.
(i) C.P. = ` 230, loss = ` 8 (ii) C.P. = ` 840, profit = ` 36
(iii) C.P. = ` 150, loss = ` 12 (iv) C.P. = ` 24, profit = ` 4
