Example 3: Find the value of the following expressions for p = 2, q = – 3 and r = – 1.
(i) 2p – 7q + 5r – 5 (ii) 3pq – 4p q + 18pqr
2
2
Solution: (i) 2p – 7q + 5r – 5 for p = 2, q = – 3, r = – 1
= 2 × 2 – 7 × (– 3) + 5 × (– 1) – 5
= 4 + 21 – 5 – 5 = 25 – 10 = 15
(ii) 3pq – 4p q + 18pqr for p = 2, q = – 3 and r = –1
2
2
= 3 × 2 × (– 3) – 4 × 2 × (– 3) + 18 × 2 × (– 3) × (– 1)
2
2
= 54 + 48 + 108 = 210
y
Example 4: Evaluate: 2 + x + 4 + z + y for x = 7, y = – 2, z = 4.
y
Solution: 2 + x + 4 + z + y
−2
= + 7 + 4 + 4 + (– 2) = – 1 + 15 – 2 = 15 – 3 = 12.
2
bc
Example 5: Find the value of c × – (7 – a) for a = 4, b = 8 and c = 5.
4
bc 8 × 5
2
Solution: c × – (7 – a) = 5 × – (7 – 4) = 50 – 3 = 47
