Being a responsible Indian citizen, especially as children, you should be aware of the Information
Technology Act, 2000. Section 66A of the IT Act prohibits offensive online communication,
and Section 67 makes online harassment punishable. Additionally, the National Commission for
Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) provides appropriate resources and guidance.
Childline India (1098) is a helpline for children facing any form of abuse, including cyberbullying.
Remember, maintaining digital privacy and reporting incidents promptly is crucial for a safer
online experience.
A FEW TOOLS & TECHNIQUES
Like Anusha, if you know of anyone who is being cyberbullied, then this is what you can do:
1. Support your friend: They would be very troubled emotionally. They need to be reminded that
you care for and value them.
2. Be a good sounding board: Allow them to vent their feelings and emotions.
3. Be there: Tell them that you are available in case they want any help.
4. Help them find a trusted adult: A person who can help them to better deal with the situation
at hand.
5. Don’t be passive and quiet: Doing nothing can leave the person feeling that everyone is against
him/her or that nobody cares. Your words can make a difference.
6. Remember that the bully may once have been bullied: The urge to bully comes from a deep
insecurity about oneself. So, try to remember that the person who is bullying now may, at some
point in the past, have been a victim of bullying themselves.
