                                            A FEW TOOLS & TECHNIQUES


            Impulse control is not only helpful in day-to-day life for maintaining focus and good
            relationships, but it also saves you from building bad habits like drug use, smoking, drinking,
            needless violence, missing classes, and so on. These habits can ruin lives.

            So, the next time you find yourself in such a situation, remember to do the following:

            •  Control your urges and whims: Remind yourself that taking any action without thinking about

                its consequences can be dangerous. You should avoid it.

            •  Calm yourself down: To do so, you can take a deep breath and hum your favourite song or think
                of your favourite place to be. This will help you distract your mind from the impulse.

            •  Think rationally: Visualise the entire situation in your mind. Try to imagine what would actually
                happen if you took the step that your impulse is pushing you to. Then you will see how it’s not
                a good idea to go ahead with recklessness.


            •   Act wisely: If you manage to control your impulse enough to think about the consequences, you
                will be able to act wisely.
