Vertical Addition

We can also add by counting lines. To add 5 and 3, we do as follows:

1. Arrange the numbers vertically. 5 |||||

2. Draw as many lines as the numbers. + 3 |||

3. Count all lines together and then write 8

the number as the sum.

Add the following by drawing lines and counting them.

3 4 8

+ 6 + 3 + 1

5 3 7

+ 2 + 3 + 2

Adding Zero

As zero means nothing, when we add 0 to a number, we get the same

number or number itself.

+ =

3 nuts + 0 nuts = 3 nuts

So, 3 + 0 = 3

+ =

0 apples + 2 apples = 2 apples

So, 0 + 2 = 2
