Email or Electronic mail is an electronic message sent from one
computer user to another through Internet. The email is delivered
almost instantly. It eliminates barriers of time and distance. You can
send and receive email messages to and from anyone, anywhere in
the world.
ADVANTAGES OF EMAIL
Email has several advantages over the traditional paper mail. Some of these are:
• Speed : An email is delivered extremely fast when compared to traditional mail. It can
reach any part of the world in a fraction of seconds.
• Cost : An email can be sent to anyone, anywhere in the world, free of cost.
• Content : An email can contain text, documents, images, audio, and video files as attachments.
• Eco-Friendly : An email is eco-friendly as you do not require paper to send it.
EMAIL ACCOUNT AND EMAIL ADDRESS
To send or receive email over the Internet, you need an email account. To create an email account,
you need to register yourself with an email service provider. Many
email service providers such as Gmail (www.gmail.com), Yahoo!
Mail (www.in.mail.yahoo.com) and Outlook (www.outlook.com)
allow you to create free email accounts.
Every email account has a unique email address. An email address
is made up of two parts – the username and the domain name,
separated by @ symbol. Email service providers

Username Domain name
Username It is the name selected by the user at the time of creation of the email account.
The symbol @ It is used to separate the username from the domain name in an email address.
Domain Name It is the address of the email service provider’s website or mail server.
