AI ETHICS
The term ‘AI ethics’ refers to a set of rules and principles related to AI systems. You know that AI enabled systems
become more capable day-by-day which raise complex ethical issues for the human world. These ethical issues
or concerns cause individuals or societies to evaluate different options in terms of what is right or what is wrong?
Let us understand with the help of examples.
u Example 1: Suppose, a man is hit by an autonomous vehicle based
on AI technology when he is trying to cross the road. In such a case,
you must think about the following questions: What should an
autonomous vehicle do? Who is responsible for this incident either
the manufacturers of autonomous vehicles or the developers of
AI systems. In simple words, we can conclude that this emerging
technology is just as much a new frontier for ethics and risk
assessment.
u Example 2: Nowadays, chatbots are used by banks and other
financial institutions for customer support which technically
sounds good. But, on the other side, chatbots are the
replacement of human workers, i.e. gasping human jobs. You
just think what is the medium of survival for human beings if
AI technology replaces human workers at such a pace.

UNESCO produced the first ever global standard on AI Ethics: the recommendation on the Ethics of
Artificial Intelligence in November 2021. This framework was adopted by all 193 member states.
Ethical Concerns of AI
Nowadays, AI controlled systems are being used widely in different sectors such as banks, education, healthcare,
manufacturing etc. because these systems have the ability to learn and can take decisions on their own without
any human intervention. For example, in the field of transportation, you have seen that various tools are
installed in semi-autonomous vehicles that allows drivers and vehicles to know about upcoming congestion
or highway construction but these systems leave serious implications on the lives of people and raises serious
ethical concerns all over the world.
Bias in the World of AI
AI Bias means favouring someone or something. When Bias
Data is fed to an AI Machine while creating the Model, the
machine will also be biased. AI Bias is an anomaly in the result
produced through AI based programs and algorithms because
of prejudiced assumptions made during the algorithm
development process or prejudices in the training data. Let
us understand with the help of an example.
Amazon, a big IT giant, developed an AI system for hiring
software engineers in 2014. Soon, amazon found that their
AI was biased against women and created the situation of
gender discrimination. This system was based on the number
