B. Historic Win for West Bengal Tribals
Reported by: A Special Correspondent, S. Kumar
After a decade long battle against the land mafia, the tribals of Birbhum district, led by their
charismatic leader Babu Mahato, has won the right to gather forest products and trade in them.
This also brings to an end to the long and bitter fight over preservation of their forest land.
Earlier, a group of land developers in collusion with local authorities had tried to take over
vast tracts of forest land and develop them for mining and industries. Not only would this
have destroyed their natural habitat and livelihood, but would also have destroyed valuable
forest land which needs to be preserved at any cost. In a rare show of unity, all the parties have
hailed this judgment as a positive step towards forest conservation.
