Let’s Learn Active and Passive Voices
The voice is a form of verb. It indicates whether the doer of an action is the subject or object
in a sentence.
Read the following sentences.
My mother wrote a letter.

A letter was written by my mother.
l
In the first sentence, the subject my mother is doing the action. Therefore, the subject is
active. Hence, the verb wrote is said to be in the active voice.
In the second sentence, the subject a letter is receiving the action or the action is done upon
it. Hence, the verb was written is said to be in the passive voice.
Formation of Active Voices and Passive Voices
Active voice: subject + verb + object
Passive voice: object + helping verb + past participle of main verb + by + subject
Read the following sentences.
Kitty kicked the pillow. (active voice)
