          The words that help in the formation of different tenses, passive forms, interrogatives and
          negatives are called the auxiliary or helping verbs. The most commonly used auxiliary verbs are
          am, is, are, was, were, have and do.

          Modals

          The helping verbs that are used along with verbs to express or indicate permission, possibility,
          certainty and necessity are called the modals or model verbs.

          They are different from verbs like sing, walk, talk, give, etc. Commonly used modals are can, could,
          may, might, will, would, shall, should and must.
          Modals are placed before the main verbs. The different characteristics of modal verbs are:

          ¾      They never change their form. They do not take -s, -ed or -ing form.
                 Read the sentences given below.

                    • He comes by six o’clock.             He should come by six o’clock.

                  They are always followed by an infinitive without to.
