Subtraction using Regrouping/Borrowing
Let us subtract 18 from 45.
T O 1 ten 1 ten
4 5 1 ten 1 ten
5 ones 15 ones
1 ten
– 1 8
8 ones
2 7 15 – 8
3 – 1
Let us learn how to borrow and subtract.
Step 1: Check digit at ones place.
T O Since 5 < 8, borrow 1 ten from 4 tens.
Step 2 3 15 Step 1 Borrowed 1 ten = 10 ones.
4 5 10 ones + 5 ones = 15 ones.
– 1 8 Step 2: Change the tens place from 4 to 3.
Step 3: Subtract ones place now.
2 7
We get, 15 – 8 = 7
Step 4: Subtract the tens column now.
We get, 3 – 1 = 2
Step 4 Step 3
So, 45 – 18 = 27
