Subtraction by Counters

Here, the combination of one positive symbol and one negative symbol represents
zero.
1. 3 –2 = ?
Here, 3 is positive number Now,
So, 3 = + 3 – 2 = 3 – 2

and 2 is negative number

Subtraction by Sticks
We can also subtract numbers using sticks.
To subtract 5 – 2, we do the following.
5 ||||| 1. Arrange the numbers in column.
– 2 2. Draw as many sticks as the bigger number.
3 3. Strike out as many sticks as the smaller number.
4. Count and write the number of sticks left as the difference.
