Measurements 137

You must have realised that some things are You said it right, Baloo. It is all because of
harder to pick up but you lift up the others their weight they have. This pot of flowers
easily. Tell me your experience about such things. is heavier than a notebook you write in.

Exactly mumma! It feels me like nothing
when I pick up a matchstick, but lifting up a Okay, mumma, got it that measurement
brick is more difficult to me. Ha ha ha!! even deal with heavy and light things.

How would you calculate Easy, mumma. I already checked
the total amount of water it yesterday. This jug can hold only
that this jug can hold? 5 glasses of water. Yeah!!!

You are smart, Baloo. In other words, we can say that
the capacity of this jug is 5 glasses of water. Capacity
is the word we use when we measure liquids. O mumma, You are great.

Carry out an activity to demonstrate how objects are measured using informal or non-standard
units. Divide the class into groups of 5. On a sheet of chart paper, the students has to trace
the palms and feet of the other group members and cut them out. Give the students a little
toothpick, and instruct them to use it to measure and compare the lengths of other group
                           member’s hands and feet.
