Pair of Lines
Given a pair of lines, what are the ways these lines can be placed? We can place a pair of lines in three different
ways which are as follows:
Intersecting lines l
When two lines cross each other at a common point, these are called intersecting lines. m
For example, in the figure given line l and line m intersect each other at point A. Few A
real-life Examples of intersecting lines are crossing roads, iron grill on windows, etc. Intersecting Lines
Crossing roads Window grills
Two lines can intersect at one point only.
Parallel lines
Observe any cuboidal box carefully. Is it possible that their a
opposite edges will ever meet? The answer is No. This implies A
when two or more lines never meet even after extending in b B
either direction these are called parallel lines. For example, P
in figure given, line a and b is a pair of parallel lines and is Q
denoted as a || b. They may also be written as AB || PQ. Parallel Lines Parallel Lines
Few real-life examples of parallel lines are opposite edges of a book, railway track, etc.

Perpendicular lines
Two lines which intersect each other at an angle of 90° are called l P
perpendicular lines. For example line l and line m are perpendicular
lines and can be denoted as l ^ m or PQ ^ RS as shown in figures 90° 90°
given. m R S
Few examples of perpendicular lines are adjacent edges of the table Q
top or a door. Perpendicular Lines
