Introduction
The term “Counting” refers to count any objects with the help of all natural numbers.
These natural numbers are always whole numbers such as 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 ...... and so on.
Mathematical number systems depend heavily on the intinite counting numbers which
could be counted. The fundamental skill we begin learning in kindergarten is how to
count. This is employed in daily life as well. With the help of this chapter, we will learn
about the various ways of counting frequently used in our daily life.
The Way of Counting
Ravi has a big farm where he cultivates fruits and vegetables.
Every day, Ravi goes to his farm and work hard to take
care of his plants. One sunny day, Ravi went to his farm
to count how many apples he had picked. But oh no! He
forgot his counting book at home. Ravi didn’t want to go
back home, so he thought of a clever way to keep track of
his apples. Ravi remembered his friend, the wise Rajesh,
told him about tally marks. The method of tally marks is
a way of counting by making simple marks. Ravi decided
to use tally marks to count his apples. For every apple he
picked, Ravi made a straight line on a paper. Aft er he made four straight lines, he drew
a diagonal line across them to show fi ft h count. Then, he started counting again.
Ravi continued to pick apples, and for each apple, he made a tally mark. Soon, he had
a whole bunch of tally marks on his paper. When he fi nished picking all the apples, he
counted the tally marks to see how many apples he had.
Write the counting number of his apples. ___________________
