Computers have become an important part of our lives. They are used in all spheres
of human activity, such as education, entertainment, medicine, transportation,
publishing, business, and defence. Computers possess features that make them
useful for most tasks that we perform in our daily life. Computers are characterised
by their high speed, accuracy, diligence, versatility, multitasking abilities, and large
storage capacity.
CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTERS
Computers are classified into different types based on several factors, such as size,
processing power, number of users, and cost. Let us learn about the main types into
which computers are classified.
Microcomputers
Microcomputers are the smallest general-purpose computers, usually with a single
CPU chip. Microcomputers are also called Personal Computers (PCs) as they are used
by one person at a time. They are affordable, have enough processing power to
perform most common computer tasks, and are capable of networking with other
computers.
Microcomputers are further classified into two types:
• Desktop Computers • Mobile Computers
Desktop Computers
Desktop computers are computers that are placed on a desk or table. A desktop
computer consists of monitor, keyboard, mouse, and system unit containing the CPU,
