DOMAINS OF AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) domains are the several fields or domains in which AI can be used. The fields of artificial
intelligence (AI) comprise a range of specialised fields wherein computers and algorithms with intelligence are
created to solve certain problems and applications.
Importance of AI Domains
Understanding the various domains of AI or applications of AI is important because AI is not one singular
technology. There are many different types of AI systems designed for different purposes. Being aware of the
major domains allows us to better grasp the current capabilities and future potential of AI in different areas.
Types of AI Domains
Let’s explore some of the most common domains of AI, these are as follows:
u Data Science u Computer Vision u Natural Language Processing
Data Science
The data science is a field of study to analyse large amounts of data. It is a technique that combines ideas and
methods from computer engineering, artificial intelligence, statistics, and mathematics. For example, questions
like what is happened, why it is happened, what will happen, and what can be done with the outcomes are some
of the questions that can be analysed. A data scientist can use different types of data while developing an AI
system which are as follows:
u Sound u Text u Images u Video
For example, the Product recommendation engines recommend products on the basis of most bought products,
most rated, most searched, etc.
Computer Vision
Computer Vision is a field of AI that describes a machine’s capacity to gather and process visual data and then
make certain predictions based on that data. The process as a whole includes obtaining, screening, analysing,
identifying, and extracting information from images. Computers can understand and respond appropriately to
any visual content due it. In computer vision, images from many sources, such as indicators, thermal or infrared
sensors, and cameras, can be fed into computers.
Self-driving cars or automatic cars are the most common example of Computer Vision as these cars have enough
potential to scan live objects i.e. nearby cars, traffic lights etc.
Natural Language Processing
Natural Language Processing is the most popular branch of AI. It deals with
the interaction between computers and humans using the natural language.
The main objective of NLP is to read, interpret, understand natural language.
Always remember that the input and output data of an NLP system can be
either voice or written text. For example, Google Translate uses NLP to enhance
translation.
